I think he means because historians study history which is the past. so it says he's looking backwards.
he could be right because the past is behind you which is backwards. And historians study history which is the past.
He could be wrong because you look into the future to see what is ahead so you can maybe be in history or so you a least be there to witness it an also just see what the world has in store for you
